You can say it, you can chant it, you can meditate on it, now read on to learn about the Reiki principles.
The Reiki principles require us to follow a complex set of guides. And by complex, we mean simple but beneficial precepts. Nina L. Paul’s probably explains it best that “they express universal truths that would be approved by any religion.” But you by no means need to be religious to practice or receive Reiki.
They express universal truths that would be approved by any religion.
So don’t worry; these principles aren’t meant to pressure you but create a positive environment and headspace to better receive Reiki treatments. And they can be applied to your furry friends as well!
Get Your Principles On
Over the years, variations of the principles were created, which can best reflect people’s lives as long as the core holds strong.
The principles in their original intent, passed down by Mikao Usui, are as follows:
- Just for today, I will not be angry.
- Just for today, I will not worry.
- Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings.
- Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
- Just for today, I will be kind to my neighbor and every living thing.
Most variations share similar verbiage, but the International Association of Reiki Professionals makes an argument “that our subconscious mind doesn’t recognize the word ‘not.’” Hence, they created a version that rewords the text to be more positive and hopefully affects people’s energy better.
Our subconscious mind doesn’t recognize the word ‘not.
Any version you follow, it’s suggested to say the Reiki principles at least twice a day, but you can speak them at any point of the day. These words help focus your energy and intention to reach a more harmonious life, which Adams Media writes about in the book The Healing Power of Reiki.
The Reiki principles are a guide for our lives, and it’s easy enough for us to apply them. However, it’s not easy to get our pets to recite these words for their own Reiki treatments.
Animal Reiki Principles
Are no different from human Reiki principles. But there are other ways to apply them to Animal Reiki.
Dulsanea Naedek, an Animal Reiki master, said that animals “reflect back like a mirror of living in the present moment and harmony.” This idea can be put into practice by reciting the principles for your own life, and then it can affect your pet’s life.

Another way to incorporate the principles may be through an Animal Reiki practitioner applying them to their own lives, which may create the best opportunities for animals through their energy treatments. Or, some practitioners will chant the principles through the Reiki session. In either situation, someone will benefit from the intentions of the precepts.
You and your pet can gain healing through the use of the five principles. Some suggestions are to write out the principles where you can see them to help you remember. Post them on your mirror or fridge. Or maybe put them somewhere you can see them at work. The visible reminder is well worthwhile.
